Chapter Twenty

Drake was at the abandoned farmhouse property again with a night vision scope held to his right eye, watching what was happening on the county road outside Scroggins’ house a mile and a half away.

The Pantera had been barreling toward the house. Whatever the cops needed with the creep, it must have been terribly urgent. Which was troubling to Drake. It was the middle of the night. What the hell could they need with Scroggins that was so damn important?

This wasn’t looking good…

Drake was just about to run to his truck and hightail it over there when he stopped and pulled out his night vision scope again. He’d seem something, another vehicle, also hurtling toward Scroggins’ house, coming from the opposite direction.

Chase Bauer.

That stupid goddamn kid again.

Bauer beat the cops to Scroggins’ driveway, passing it before they did. The Dodge truck quickly pulled to the center of the road, coming to a sudden halt, stopping so quickly that it rocked on its suspension.

The Pantera had come to a more gradual stop, and the two cops had gotten out slowly, tactically, guns aimed toward the truck. Drake could hear nothing, but through the scope he had seen the cops shouting toward the truck.

The Bauer kid had climbed out, hands in the air. The black cop had kept his gun aimed at the kid while the white one patted him down.

And when the kid had been found to be clean, guns were put away. And since then, for several long minutes, the three of them had held a conversation, right there in the middle of that cold, empty county road, illuminated by the two vehicles’ headlights.

Shit.

Drake needed to get over there. Now.

He knew that Bauer would be a problem. Idiot.

The kid just cost Scroggins his life.
